Repaving the Acireale historical city center

Work execution period: 2007 - 2008

Client: Municipality of Acireale

Activities: Works management and Execution Phase Safety Coordination

Amount:  4.76 million Euros

This project envisioned the repaving with lava paving stone of the Sicilian city’s streets and squares  for the architectural enhancement of its esteemed Baroque image. Intervention also included the reconstruction of obsolete parts of the underlying utility network such as  the sewer system, water mains, methane gas lines, and the laying of raceways for the public illumination network in order to  prevent the need for the construction/repair of the same after the repaving of the surface.  The works consisted in substituting the existing pavement in bituminous concrete or concrete with new paving in coarse-size bush-hammered lava paving stone in area subjected to motor vehicle traffic and fine-size bush-hammered lava  paving stone in pedestrian-only areas, and in the recovery and re-use of the streets’ existing paving stone through chipping on site. Ramps that comply with regulations for the elimination of barriers to transit by disabled user were adopted for footpaths and  sidewalks and wherever else required.
